The national digital identity platform of the United Arab Emirates is transitioning the blockchain architecture supporting its document vault to Avalanche, according to a September 14 blog post from the network. The update applies to UAEPASS, the state-backed authentication system utilized by citizens, residents, and visitors to verify their identities, execute digital signatures, and access various public- and private-sector online services—a platform that reportedly accommodates 12.5 million users. This initiative represents one of the most substantial government-backed implementations of a blockchain-powered identity infrastructure announced to date.
A National Identity System at Scale
Management of UAEPASS falls under the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), which serves as the federal digital administration body for the UAE. The platform grants users access to upwards of 15,000 services, with more than 350 government departments and private companies depending on its infrastructure. Embedded within the ecosystem is the Digital Vault, a feature responsible for managing verified documents. It enables individuals to request, store, and present credentials to institutions requiring authenticity proof. For users, this minimizes the need to repeatedly gather identical documentation; for organizations, it cuts down on redundant verification processes for files that cannot be independently authenticated.
Why the Vault Is Moving to Avalanche
Avalanche reported that the TDRA is modernizing the blockchain foundation of the Digital Vault to enhance the performance and scalability required for the ongoing expansion of verifiable documents and digital identity nationwide. The network presented the transition as a pathway to establishing trust on a national level, explaining that a decentralized ledger—which no single entity can alter unilaterally—allows an organization to validate a ministry-issued credential via a simple lookup instead of conducting independent checks. This migration compounds a series of recent institutional adoptions of the network, which includes Charles Schwab’s intention to introduce spot trading for Avalanche.
Blockchain Identity Momentum
This disclosure mirrors a broader trend of regulated entities utilizing Avalanche for identity and tokenization projects, following previous milestones like institutional secondary trades that established a framework for tokenized private credit on the network. Avalanche pointed to the UAE’s migration as proof that national-grade digital identity systems can function on a tamper-proof shared record instead of traditional paper. Because the UAE regulator has not yet issued a separate public confirmation of the upgrade, the situation remains a developing story that has the potential to transform how government credentials are distributed and shared.
